The 6th Company of Emperor’s Children were created from the geneseed of their Primarch during the First Founding of Space Marines, but their true origin lay in the aftermath of the Battle of Skalathrax. Prior to the Horus Heresy the Company was one of the best fighting forces in the Imperium, and many planets surrendered instead of facing the wrath of the Children of the Emperor. They lost none of their prowess during the Heresy; some would say they gained power by turning their hearts from the Emperor’s Grace. Yet after Skalathrax the Emperor’s Children Legion was scattered, and the 6th Company was one of the many warbands resulting from the planetary defeat. The Company Apothecary, Lt. Lazarus Durne, rallied one fragment of the 6th Company and led them from the ice world, swearing dark oaths of vengeance upon the World Eaters Chapter that scattered them.
Prince Lazarus Durne started his career as an Apothecary in the pre-Heresy Emperor’s Children Legion. He was among the first recruits created from Fulgrim’s gene-seed when their Primarch was found. His service in the Adeptes Astartes was unassuming to the majority of Emperor’s Children; he only received battlefield honors on a few separate occasions. He did distinguish himself however for his service as Apothecary, by healing the wounded, preserving precious gene-seed, and creating advanced serums for battle field anesthesia or heightening the senses.
After the Fall he rose to the rank of Lieutenant and led a unit under the command of Lord-Commander Morpheus. His unit assisted in the rendering of drugs on Terra during the siege on the Palace, as well as in the Eye of Terror after their exile.
It was on the planet Skalathrax during the battle against the World Eater Legion that Lt. Durne received his first full command. During the battle Kharne betrayed his own Legion, turning ally into enemy and forcing both Legions into the frigid night. The Emperor’s Children fought the World Eaters, both sides succumbing to the glacial cold as much as battle wounds. Separated from their Company and forced to take shelter from the sub-zero night, Durne’s unit was assaulted by World Eaters. Taking up a sonic blaster, Lt. Durne led an advance into the champions of Khorne while shouting his exaltations to Slaanesh. The cold appeared not to affect the unit, instead invigorating them into an ecstatic frenzy of wanton destruction. Knowing the war was lost but not wishing to die for lack of experience, Lt. Durne led the remnants of the 6th Co. to the gunship ‘Temptator’ and into space. Separated from his Legion and with a small contingent of the 6th Company, he took the title of Lord-Commander and led them deeper into the Eye of Terror.
History is lost on what occurred during the early days of Lord Durne’s first command. Imperial records note guerilla raids upon shipyards and convoys, the elusive enemy striking and withdrawing with surgical precision. Soon after, the Gothic War erupted and these attacks were lost in the morass of battle that ensued. One ship, ‘The Original Sin’, is recorded as taking part in the Gothic War as well as in attacks attributed to the 6th Company leading up to the 13th Crusade.
The atrocities committed by the 6th Company are numerous. Loyalists call his legion ‘The Forgotten Children’ and swear vengeance for the single-handed destruction of the Grail Knights Space Marine Chapter. The Ulthwe Eldar call him ‘Slaamor, The Devourer’, for his constant assault upon their race and the sacrifice of uncountable spirit stones on the altars of Slaanesh. The Orks of Rhydiin IX call him ‘Da Skinna’ and seek out combat with the 6th Company every chance they get. Yet after every battle that Lazarus Durne is documented to have fallen in battle, he is reported later to be fighting anew and with an inhuman vigor.
The 6th Company involvement in the 13th Crusade is recorded, though information is incomplete. It is known that after his Ascendancy he struck out at the Imperium on the planet Belisimar, following the commands of one known as ‘The Voice of Slaanesh, The Scion’. After aiding the uprising of Pleasure Cults on Belisimar, the 6th Company left just as quickly. They were then seen in the Cadian system aiding the Violators Chapter on Vigilatum and feasting with Lucius the Eternal on Belisar. Owing tithe to the Despoiler the 6th was called from Belisar to fight alongside the unified Legions on Thracian Primaris, fulfilling their oaths and paying their debt in full. There is one account of a battle against The World Eaters during this time, proving that the banner of Abaddon could not stem the hatred of the two Legions. Following this dark sabbatical the 6th Company is believed to have followed The Scion of Slaanesh until the end of the Crusade. The activities of many Fallen Chapters were lost in the destruction of Macharia from Abaddon’s Planet Killer, and current activities are at present, unknown. The 6th Company is declared Exterminatus Extremis by the Inquisition, with Inquisitor Cyrus Hemlock assigned to the destruction of Prince Durne and his Forgotten Children.
Prince Durne and the 6th Company sting still from the Emperor’s betrayal, shown to them by their Primarch millennia ago on Horus’ battle barge. Their hate and anger finds vent against the misguided zealots of the Imperium. Prince Durne strives to recreate the days millennia ago when their Primarch led his Legion across countless worlds in an orgy of pain and death. With his ascendancy to Daemonhood he finds his lust for experience ever greater, and still commands the 6th Company to this day.
Homeworld
No records of the Emperor’s Children homeworld exist outside the vaults of the High Lords of Terra. But the oldest members of the Legion still remember the twilight world of Chemos. Following the Heresy Imperial forces assaulted their homeworld from orbit, intending to destroy their fortress-monastery and eradicate any trace of Chaos from the world. To this date no information of Chemos has been recorded, including references of Exterminatus, in the databases of the Imperium.
The Emperor’s Children 6th Company stage their campaigns of indulgence from a fleet of ships, using the daemon-worlds in the Eye of Terror as their guerilla bases. The fleet consists of ships from the Heresy as well as modern battle barges taken as spoils of war. The Space Marine battle barge liberated from the Grail Knights Chapter is the 6th Company’s flagship. The Imperial crew destroyed many of the operating systems during the boarding, but the ship was saved before the plasma drives could be overloaded. Refitted to Despoiler class status and renamed ‘Temptator’ after the gunship that saved the Company millennia ago, it is now the pride of the 6th Company fleet. Other known ships under his command are ‘The Original Sin’, ‘Lustmort’ and ‘Balberith’. All carry orders of Exterminatus Extremis if ever encountered.
Combat Doctrine
The Forgotten Children pursue ultimate pleasure in all forms, including battle. The Emperor’s Children are relentless; surgical strikes of precision with supporting fire and the ability to deploy where needed. They relish the experience of allowing daemons to enter their mortal coil, and possession is much sought after, as is the practice of summoning the daemons of Slaanesh.
The 6th Company remain vicious, savage warriors, delighting in the destruction they cause in battle, serving Prince Durne in return for fresh slaves upon which to practice their devotion to Slaanesh.
Organization
Prince Durne leads the 6th Company on their raids from the ‘Temptator’, his Warp-form kept in Real Space by the devotions of pleasure slaves. Lt. Solomon Hex acts as Prince Durne’s second, being both Chaplain to the Company and Brother Sorcerer in the Arts Daemonic. Champions aspiring for Ascendancy lead the Assault and Tactical units, while those driven insane by possession are kept enthralled with sensation until needed for battle. Prince Durne adorns his Company in the colors of the original Emperor’s Children Legion; purple armor with gold trim. Those with pure gene-seed stock paint their helmets white to denote their purity. They take pride in their double-headed eagle motif, and the anger it instills in their misguided brethren.
Beliefs
"We are His children. Let all who look upon us know this. Only by imperfection can we fail him. We will not fail!" Fulgrim, Primarch of the Emperor’s Children.
The 6th Company believes in Slaanesh in all his forms, yet still carry their Primarch’s ideal of perfection. They commit acts of hedonism looking for the ultimate sensation yet hold their battle skills in just as high regard, striving to perfect the art of combat while embellishing their skills of war.
Noise Marine Cults are still active in the 6th Company, but not many succumb to one aspect of their Patron, preferring instead to indulge in every experience that can be afforded them.
Gene-seed
“After the near destruction of the Legion in the gene-seeding process, surviving fragments of the Codex Apothecarion Terra indicate that absolute excellence was demanded of the Apothecaries who handled and worked on the precious genetic material. This ethos quickly merged with the Legion’s general belief in perfection, so that the Emperor’s Children gene-seed was perhaps the most pure and stable of all the Legions. Only the finest physical specimens were chosen for implantation, so that the mutation rate of the gene-seed was practically zero. Every enhancement produced by the gene-seed functioned at peak efficiency, allowing the Space Marines to achieve their full potential in battle. No other Space Marine Legion achieved such a goal, and the technology and expertise required have never been rediscovered in the millennia following the Horus Heresy.” Index Astartes – Emperor’s Children
Knowing the affects that exposure to the Warp has on gene-seed, Apothecaries in the 6th Company do not hesitate to harvest gene-seed from Loyalist Space Marines, even those exhibiting mutations such as the Blood Angels and Space Wolves. There is a sense of pride in being of pure gene-seed stock, and those who are created from Imperial gene-seed must work harder to prove their loyalty to the 6th Company.
Battle-cry
"Children of the Emperor! Death to his foes!" Battlecry of the Emperor’s Children, pre-Horus Heresy.
“For Agony! For Ecstasy! For Slaanesh!” Battlecry of the Forgotten Children, post-Horus Heresy.
Using the Forgotten Children in Warhammer 40,000
A copy of Chaos Space Marines is needed to play a Forgotten Children Company.
The 6th Company follows the rules found in Codex: Chaos Space Marines with these additional restrictions:
Troops: The 6th Company enjoys a close relationship with their Patron Slaanesh and his minions. One unit of Daemonettes must be taken as a Compulsory Troops choice.
Heavy Support: Aside from the sonic destruction afforded by the Noise Marine cult, long-range weaponry is poorly regarded among the 6th Company, especially when combat prowess can be proven in hand-to-hand combat. The following units count as 0-1, i.e., a maximum of one of each may be used in a 6th Company army: Chaos Havocs, Chaos Predator, and Chaos Land Raider.
Skalathrax is ours! In any game against a World Eater army, both sides are subject to the intense hatred of their Patrons as well as the failed battle on Skalathrax. Chaos Space Marines from both Chapters hit each other on a 3 . This includes Lords and Lieutenants, Chosen, Possessed, Chaos Bikers, and Chaos Havocs.
Mittens
The Book of Mittens, as detailed by Scribe Parr ~
This is from the Testament of the Plot Thickeners:
"Now twilight descended upon the Twenty who were gathered beside the shores of Ulixis. The sky receded in a pale violet dome and starlings crossed overhead in the last summer light.
The waters broke gently upon the pebbly shore where the Twenty sat and it was nice there.
Soon the Twenty were joined by the Emperor who came down the path holding a small cat.
And the Emperor sat with them and spake:
Behold this small cat that was found amidst the cactus trees.
Wearing no collar and possessing no tag, henceforth let it be said that this is the Emperor's Cat and His name shall be Mittens.
And all who heard Him were amazed and they all stood up, then sat back down.
And each of the Twenty (except Perturabo, who was allergic to the Emperor's Cat) scratched Mittens behind His ear.
And to the just above the base of the tail did they scratch also - which Mittens liked very much.
And they told stories and they repeated jokes and chortled loudly late into the evening until finally the Eldar had enough and attacked them."
The story of Mittens' Great Betrayal is a mystery. Some Imperial scholars
have speculated that he was fed the warpstone-tainted meat of a Hrud
Greyseer, but the Inquisition have had them all shot for mixing their games
systems.
No, the actual truth is far more sinister...
During the attack on the Emperor's Palace, a unit of Emperor's Children
Terminators found Mittens dozing on the telly. There, they spent the rest
of the battle rubbing his belly, giggling, and feeding him catnip. In the
end, Mittens was picked up by the scruff of his neck and dragged mewling
into the Eye of Terror, where he has been tomming on various Daemon Worlds
ever since.
Mittens counts as an HQ choice, but does not count toward the minimum HQ requirement. Mittens is Unique.
