Origins

Compared to other followers of Slaanesh, the Legion has an austere, almost melancholy visage. The Company is said to often starve themselves of any form of pleasure or excess for years at a time, in order to make the eventual fulfillment of their desires all the more potent. Samael himself is said to be more of an inspirational leader, rather than being one to bark orders a simple glance or gesture will suffice to convey his orders to his troops. He is known to suffer an uncontrolable hatred of anyone he percieves as being falsely proud or possessing of a similar trait. This loathing often centres on the Ultramarines, who he sees as unfit to even call themselves Warriors. The 18th Grand Company will always seek to hunt down any members of the Ultramarines chapter, even compromising their stated mission objectives to achieve the slaughter of a single Ultramarine.

"I would have dearly loved to have been the one to end the life of that wretch Guilliman. But I thank the dark gods that my lord Fulgrim was allocated the task." Attributed to Samael The Malefic, Circa M39.

Homeworld: Octavius IX

The surface of the Daemon world of Octavius IX is covered by a globe spanning city, which rises into the perpetually dark purple sky like talons seeking out their prey. The Planet was pulled into the Eye of Terror at the time of Slaanesh's birth and has since fallen into the dominion of the 18th Grand Company of the Emperors Children, led by the Daemon Prince Samael the Malefic. The race that originally built the terrifying, almost impossible cityscape has been long forgotten in the ether of time and it is likely they will never be remembered. Opinion contrasts as to whether the Cthonic architecture of the lifeless city was built in this manner, or whether the corrupting power of the warp has altered it into it's current state. Impossible stairways with 10 metre high treads ascend to nowhere, whilst arches crisscross in bizarre patterns that are almost impossible for the mortal mind to comprehend. Some argue that the masonry itself is actually alive, certainly there would appear to be no true path for the unwary to try to circumvent the planet-wide necropolis.

Bizarre Bass-reliefs seem to melt before the eye, transmuting themselves from howling maws into even more unidentifiable configurations. Delicate inlays of precious metals seem to reflect the light differently at the times of day one would expect for a diurnal cycle, at odds with the fact that the planet has no such cycle. It is ever the deepest purple hue of twilight bordering on black. The treacherous way is lit by a million score braziers that continue to give off a sickly light that is never quite adequate to navigating the endlessly labyrinthine network of streets. The city is clearly visible from orbit, like the insane scrawls of a mind no sane person would ever like to understand.

Even the most morally degraded member of the Legion would be loathe to inhabit such a dangerously insane environ, and so another place had to be found. The Sorcerer Cyphius Tyr led an expedition early in M33 into the city, the bizarre cityscape seemed to welcome these new visitors into it's embrace and the way was shown to them. By what, no one shall ever know. Tyr discovered a grand structure with the aspect of a mighty cathedral from the ancient times of Terra. (another salient point to ruminate upon would be the likeness some structures seem to bare to structures familiar to those explorers from the Legion. These anomalies were never fully explored, as the way was often barred to the Legionnaires. By what, again, we can only speculate.) In the centre of the might vaulted chamber was a wide staircase, with the aspect of bone. This led further and further down into the abyssal depths of the planet, seemingly further than would be logically possible. (Indeed, many of the weaker members of the exploratory company fell to exhaustion along the way. Their flesh was of course consumed, taken to be a gift from She Who Thirsts to the strongest, that they might complete their appointed task.)

When finally at the bottom of the endless stair, Tyr performed a ritual of marking in order to set the location for one of his more powerful teleportation glyphs. With this achieved, the rest of the Legion were able to make their way down into the infernal chamber in order to attempt to fully explore that cavernous place. The place was found to be a grand library, the likes of which surely only the Famed Black Library of the dying Eldar could claim to surpass in sheer scope of the dark arts. Tyr thanked Slaanesh for this mighty gift, with a thousand score sacrifices of those that the Legion had captured in their flight from Terra. Fully exploring the subterranean labyrynth proved all but impossible, as the tunnels seem to be endless. Many scouting parties have lost their way for what seems like years, before finding themselves at the point they departed, seemingly with no real time having passed according to their commanding officers.

Thus it is that the 18th Grand Company found a home, the most odd of daemon worlds known as Octavius IX. The planet is deemed secure, with little need for defences beyond the one large orbital dockyard, where the Fell Admiral Caervius and his fleet await orders from the Malefic. Few are foolish enough to venture there, indeed none are so foolish as to attempt to writhe the damned planet away from the clutches of the 18th Grand Company. Amongst the few non Legionnaires that visit are the many Sorcerers of the Thousand Sons, who share an unusually cordial rapport with the Lord Sorcerer Cyphius Tyr. Forbidden from entering the city alone, they frequently visit the arcane library, that they might glean knowledge from it's eternity of dusty tomes. Requests to observe the odd phenomenon that is the city of the surface are politely rebuffed with a reminder that entry to the hallowed library of Tyr should not be taken from granted. Thus it was, thus it is, and thus it shall forever be.

Combat Doctrine

The company largely followed the dictates of Fulgrim, seeing no reasons to diverge from the percieved perfection of Fulgrim's leadership. The legion is thought to have participated in the massacres on Terra during the Horus Heresy, but due to the sheer scale of the bloodshed, little can be remembered from this time.

Organization

The company strictly adheres to the wishes of Slaanesh, with all units tending to comprise of either six or twelve marines.

Beliefs

Gene-seed

Samael the Malefic was created with the DNA of the primarch Fulgrim. Thenceforth the legion was created from stock Emperors Children gene-seed. When the Company experienced great losses, during an Internecine war against the foul servants of Khorne, the legion was forced to steal loyalist gene-seed. Fabius Bile was grudgingly enlisted to undertake the necessary steps to further create more Children of the Malefic.

Battle-cry

"Souls for Slaanesh!"

Sometimes the legion uses "For the Emperor!" So to mock servents of the corpse god.
